R.I.P Gary Speed

December 5th, 2011 § Leave a Comment

I watched Gary Speed playing for Newcastle United as I was growing up. Number 11 Gary Speed making up the formation of the magpies midfield. He was one of my favourite players. Before he went to Newcastle United he had been a member of Leeds United. He was a part of the 1992 winning team that won the old First Division title (before it became the Premier League).  I am a massive Leeds United fan – Gary Speed was one of my sporting icons as I was growing up.

Over the past week tributes have been pouring in over the loss of a great footballer as well as a man just beginning his managerial career as head coach of Wales.  Speed’s sudden death has brought together so many mourning fans. A tribute at the Billy Bremner statue in front of Elland Road illustrates all of it – the effect Gary Speed had on the footballing world.

Watching tribute videos gives me chills (like the one above). It shows how fragile a life is and how it can easily be lost.  What a fitting tribute would it be to Gary Speed if Leeds were promoted! Fingers crossed!! Marching on together forever!

I’m going to sign off with a some photos I’ve seen posted on Facebook:
